Trini Lopez still has got the 'right to rock'By NEIL RAMOSFebruary 11, 2011,MANILA, Philippines

At 73, Trini Lopez is remarkably fit as evidenced by his performance at the Araneta Coliseum on Feb. 10.

Performing for almost two hours non-stop, Lopez was an inspiration to the considerable number of people—mostly of his age—who came to watch him perform more than a dozen of his hits.

Singing, shimmying and playing his trademark, self-designed Gibson signature guitar, like he did all those years a long time ago, Lopez looked like he had discovered the fountain of youth as he blazed through such numbers with seeming ease: “Love Is In The Air,” "I'm Comin' Home, Cindy," and of all things, “This Land Is Your Land.”

Well, like most performances, there were actually a few missed cues as with some botched notes but ever the trouper, Lopez more than made up for it with his energetic playing and witty banter.

Lopez would even egg his band—composed of young, Filipino musicians—to give it a bit more “oomph” as he did, counting off some of the numbers with a brisk, “A-one, a-two, a-three, a-faw.”

And the crowd, which included a handful of local luminaries like Pilita Corrales, Stella Marquez-Araneta, RJ Jacinto, Franklin Drilon, Eddie Gutierrez and Annabelle Rama, responded with glee; clapping, singing and dancing with Lopez just barely midway through the show.

Shining moments included Lopez’ extended version of the classic "Malaguena Salerosa," which Lopez began with a superb solo performance on guitar.

No doubt, it took some time before Lopez was able to warm his picking fingers but when he finally did get it on, the notes eventually rang true—and just in time as when he started playing the faster, more rocking numbers like “Shame and Scandal” and “Lemon Tree.”

Warmed up and all sweaty, Lopez upped his singing, doing scats and tex-mex styled yodeling along the way. His guitar playing got livelier as well even as he executed some well-placed solos in between choruses.

Lopez did good to leave his biggest hits “If I had a Hammer” and “La Bamba” for last.

Making his exit with the crowd still aching for more, Lopez proved once and for all that he still has what it takes--the magic, the energy, the passion and the soul as when he started recording his first ever hit, "The Right to Rock" at 18.

No doubt this senior citizen can still rock and how.
